House Passes Gun Control Bills That Would Expand Background Checks

The House of Representatives passed the first major gun control bills since Biden took office.

Two bills were passed by the Democratic-controlled House, and they would expand background checks on firearm sales.

When Biden was campaigning for the 2020 election, he vowed to bring forth legislation strengthening background checks.

Here’s more from Politico:

Emboldened by their majorities in the House and Senate, Democrats are making a new push to enact the first major new gun control laws in more than two decades — starting with stricter background checks.

The House passed two bills Thursday to require background checks on all firearms sales and transfers and to allow an expanded 10-day review for gun purchases. Similar bills were passed by the House in 2019, shortly after Democrats won the majority, but languished in the GOP-controlled Senate for the next two years.

House Republicans are not thrilled with the passage of the bills, claiming they infringe on people’s 2nd Amendment rights.

The bills now have a steep upward battle in the upper chamber.

In order for them to move through, Democrats would need support from 10 Senate Republicans.

With only a slim majority in the Senate, it will likely be a difficult task to get to the 60 needed votes.

Despite the challenge in the Senate, Democrat leaders touted the bills being passed.

“If you are afraid to vote for gun violence prevention because of your political survival, understand this: The political survival of none of us is more important than the survival of our children,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi declared.
